Why the size of a sign matters

Deciding on the size that a business sign should be is an important part of the design process.

If you make the sign too small, it will be impossible for people to read it. On the other hand, an overly large sign will look clumsy and intrusive. Try these pointers for getting it right.

Think about its placement

Where the finished sign will be placed should play a big part in determining its size. If it is going to be positioned high above the entrance – for example, a shop sign – it needs to be fairly large in scale. This is so the public can see and read it from ground level.

By contrast, signs that are placed at eye level – such as wall signs for professional organisations – should be smaller. This will ensure they can be read by people without having to step back from them.

Consider the overall space

The amount of space you have in the spot where you want your sign to go is another consideration. It has to be designed to a size where it will not block off doors or windows.

Failing to think about this will make your business seem unprofessional and can even negatively impact workers and customers. The sign must be sized so that it can fit in crucial information, such as your name and logo, without sacrificing readability. Making the best use of the available space is the key.
