What is flame polished lettering?

Flame polishing is used to create a clean finish for letters made from 3D custom-cut acrylic (Perspex). Each individual letter is cut from a piece of this acrylic material with a CNC router or laser, but this process does not produce flawless results. It usually leaves tiny marks and raw, scruffy edges.

To rectify this, manufacturers first sand down the edges and then apply heat to them for a few seconds. This is done using a torch producing a hydrogen/oxygen or butane flame. What this flame does is melt the outer layer, while surface tension causes it to retract into a smooth, glassy finish. The process has some elements in common with polishing diamonds.
