What fire safety signage does a business need?

Every commercial building will need to have some form of fire safety signage, but the precise requirements can vary.

This blog will explore what types of fire safety signs there are, and where they should be placed within a building.

The legislation

The primary piece of fire safety legislation for this country is The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – more commonly referred to as the RRO. It unifies all fire safety laws under a single umbrella.

Types of fire safety signs

There are four main kinds of fire safety signs. The first is a Fire Action Notice, which indicates the actions to be performed if a fire breaks out.

The second is signage that highlights emergency fire assembly points and exits. The third is signage that tells people where firefighting equipment like extinguishers can be found.

Finally, there are Prohibition or Warning signs intended to reduce the risk of fire, such as No Smoking signs.

In terms of what a business needs, it will vary depending on the type of company, the layout of the building and what existing equipment there is. The best way to work out what you will require is by conducting a risk assessment.

Other points to bear in mind

Any fire safety signs that you install must be placed in the correct positions if they are to meet legislative obligations. Getting them installed by professionals will ensure they are properly placed.
