Three directional signage errors that cause confusion
When directional signage is done right, it is almost invisible. If you get it wrong though, people will notice them – but not in a good way. They will be cursing the signs in mounting frustration, as confusion reigns. Here are three mistakes that lead to that outcome.
Neglecting a journey map
Before you can create a directional signage system, you must understand the perspective of visitors. Where is the place of arrival, what will they need to locate and where are the main decision points?
Walk through the various visitor routes and take note of each decision point. These are where signs should be installed.
Mixing up the terminology
Organisations often fail to be consistent in the signage terminology. One will direct people towards the ‘front desk’, while another will point them to the ‘reception’ and a third may signpost a ‘welcome area’. This leaves people trying to work out if they all refer to the same place. Make sure the terms used are the same across all directional signs.
Providing too much information
Some organisations try to fit all of their directions onto one sign, in the belief that this is efficient. It may mean paying for fewer signs, but it will not make it easy for people when viewing the signs at a glance. It’s better to have more signs and only include essential information.
