The different kinds of illuminated signage

Signs that are lit up can really grab the attention of potential customers, whether they are at the front of a shop or inside an office space. There is more than one kind of illuminated sign that you can get though. This article will list the main varieties, to help you pick the ideal one for your company.

Face lit signs

These are ones where the actual letters on the sign are lit up. They are an extremely popular choice for restaurant fascias, retail centres and airports, among other places. Each letter of the sign has a back tray in which LED modules sit and light it up either yellow or white. The colour can be changed by adding sign vinyl or coloured acrylic.

Edge lit signs

Edge lit signs are ones where the lighting is around the sides of the letters, rather than coming from the letters themselves. The face of each letter is non illuminated and blocks off the light, while clear acrylic diffuses it to the edges to produce a warm glowing effect. The contrast also helps the darker lettering to stand out. High-end shops and offices that want a classy look often choose this.

Halo lit signs

These are similar to edge lit ones in that they employ clear acrylic to move the lighting away from the lettering. This acrylic is placed in the back tray though and it makes the lighting ring each letter like a halo. It is great for shop fronts.
