Manchester data centre construction underway

Work on the building of a brand new data centre in a district of Manchester has now officially started, with the chosen site being a former industrial estate.

This centre is being constructed by Kao Data, and it will also be operating the facility once it is up and running.

The project is set to cost a total of £350 million to complete and will be based in the Stockport region of the city. Kao Data is stating that it will be crucial to the digital infrastructure of the entire North West.

That comes in the wake of data centres being classified under Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) by the new government. It is hoped that the completed facility will make the city even more of a main digital hub for the country.

According to a local source, Mayor Andy Burnham said that:

“As we continue our mission to ensure world-class digital infrastructure for the region, this new data centre will play a pivotal part in our fast-growing and diverse technology ecosystem.”

He went on to add that it would help ensure that Manchester remained a global leader in the field of artificial intelligence.

The new centre is being built on a site that used to house a number of industrial units. It is expected to be completed and ready for use by 2026.
