Manchester Airport station project lands contractor
Plans for a series of improvements at Manchester Airport train station have taken a big step forward, with the appointment of a contractor.
This work will be carried out by Kier, after the company was awarded the contract by Network Rail. It will involve a set of upgrades to be completed over the next two years. Network Rail is spending £65 million to make the facilities at this transport hub fitting for the modern day.
Among the changes that will be made to the station are updates to its signalling systems, reworking the tracks and lengthening the platforms. The work at Manchester Airport station is just one part of the overall upgrade scheme, which will also take in Manchester Piccadilly station.
The opening phase of the work will take a single day and will see Kier construct a new utility bridge over the railway. This is to support electrical cables. The station will be closed on the day in question.
Simon Daly is a senior sponsor at Network Rail. Speaking to Construction News he said:
“Manchester Airport station plays a vital role in connecting people across the country. These improvements will create more capacity for passengers, allow longer trains to serve the station and improve the reliability of services for years to come.”
Work is scheduled to begin on 6th December and be completed by the middle of 2028. Disruption to station users will be kept to a minimum during that time.
