Agreement reached for tower blocks in Manchester
Manchester City Council has come to a section 106 agreement with a local property developer for the construction of five towers.
Under the terms of it, Renaker has committed to providing a maximum of £114 million towards affordable housing. Payment of this sum will be made in a staggered fashion.
With the 106 deal in place, the developer will now be free to proceed with its planned project, which consists of five residential blocks. The total housing units that will be created is close to 2,400, all of which will be flats.
When construction gets underway, it will have been a long time coming. The local authority gave its backing to the plans over two years ago. The expected cost of the project is around £1 billion.
One of the tower blocks has been given the nickname The Lighthouse and will have 71 floors. This will make it the tallest structure in the entire city and highest anywhere in the country apart from London. It is set to provide 640 of the flats and will also feature a restaurant. Construction costs for this tower will be approximately £235 million.
The design of The Lighthouse was undertaken by Simpson Haugh Architects. It has an exterior with a chequered look and a glazed lantern-style crown. This latter feature is why it is being called The Lighthouse.
Great Jackson Street will be the location for the towers.
