Three tips for designing wayfinding signage that works

One of the most common types of signage needed by organisations is wayfinding signage.

Whether you are running an office or a hospital, visitors will need to be able to find their way around, and that is what these signs are for – at least, if they are properly designed. Follow these three tips to get it right.

Keep it simple

The design of wayfinding signs should always prioritise simplicity. This means using a font that is highly readable – even from a distance.
It also means keeping the amount of information to a minimum. Include only what is absolutely necessary, and use concise language.

Consider the location

Where you place your wayfinding signs is important to the design of the overall system. They must be placed logically, in spots where people are most likely to look for them.

The best way to accomplish this is to look at your premises from the perspective of a first-time visitor. Think about the areas where such a person will need to find their way around, and where the natural place for a sign would be.

Allow for creativity

Although wayfinding signs are primarily functional items, this does not mean they have to be unattractive or dull. Why not take the opportunity to promote your business, and add a little colour and style to the building through the medium of these signs?
