Work starts on construction job at Salford University

Work is now underway on the construction of a new acoustics building within the University of Salford, which is set to be used for a combination of teaching, testing and research.

When it has been completed, the new building will represent a major upgrade for the University of Salford. This facility has long been considered a world leader in the field of acoustics work; conducting cutting-edge research that has led to the development of innovative products. The new acoustics centre will enable people to carry out precision engineering on things such as hearing aids powered by AI (artificial intelligence).

The chosen location for the building is within the Crescent Innovation zone, which combines education, industry and housing. It is part of a wider project called Crescent Salford that is being delivered by several partners. They include ECF, Salford City Council and the University.

Financing for the building has been provided by Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the cost is expected to be close to £24 million. The contractor that has been appointed to construct it is Morgan Sindall Construction.

Trevor Cox is the University of Salford’s Professor of Acoustics. Speaking to Invest in Manchester, he said:

“It is great to see our new building under construction. This is a very exciting time for acoustics at Salford as acoustics research is becoming increasingly relevant to society today.”

The completed building will have a range of state-of-the-art features. It is due to be finished in the middle of 2027.
