What does a good shop sign look like?
Most people will know when they see a really good shop sign. They may make a mental note of it, or perhaps they will feel compelled to go inside and explore.
Not many think seriously about what makes a shop sign good though, which is what this blog will explore.
To the point
The first thing to recognise about effective shop signage is that it gets straight to the point. It contains the name of the shop and a core message that the owners want to get across. It can be serious or humorous, but never long-winded, as this will make potential customers tune out.
Well-designed
The design covers a number of areas. It is the process of bringing together the various elements – from the message to the font and colour scheme – to ensure the best possible results.
Well-designed signs have snappy messaging, easy-to-read fonts and coherent colour schemes. Badly designed ones feature confused messages, curly font style and clashing colours.
Individual appeal
You can get all of this right and still end up with a sign that makes little impact. What may be missing is any sense of individual personality.
What do you want people to think about your shop when they see the sign? Do you want to convey a sense of fun or sober seriousness? Once you know that, you can create a sign with the right personality.
