What are the vehicle livery regulations in the UK?
Getting vinyl lettering or wraps added to your company vehicles is one of the most effective – and cost-effective – ways of promoting your brand. Like most forms of signage though, there are regulations that you must abide by. In this blog, we will break them down for you.
Is DVLA registration needed?
This will depend on whether the graphics alter the vehicle’s base colour. If they do, then you will need to inform the DVLA of the colour change. This will not be necessary if you are adding simple lettering to the vehicles, but will almost certainly be required for full body wraps.
What are the advertising regulations?
When it comes to promotional graphics, they have to be compliant with the regulations laid down by the Advertising Standards Authority. This means you cannot use text or images that are inappropriate or offensive, cannot make misleading claims and cannot deploy protected branding or restricted trademarks.
What about reflective vinyl graphics?
It’s fine to add reflective vinyl graphics to your vehicles, with a couple of caveats. They must not look like those of emergency vehicles like ambulances. They must also not cover number plates, windows or lights. The safest option is to use the right grades – for example, the RA1 grade for company logos. It is also wise to avoid designs that are similar to those of ambulances or police cars, such as chevrons.
