Two main lettering options for shop signs

The lettering that is used on a shop sign is of paramount importance. It has to combine stylishness with readability, as well as being in keeping with your brand.

This blog will look at the two main shop sign lettering choices available.

Flat cut lettering

The first option you can select is flat cut lettering. This is created by mounting the letters onto the sign using locators on the backs of each individual letter.

The name comes from the fact that the lettering is thinner, so it looks flat against the sign. Letters of this type will normally be made out of either metal or acrylic and are laser cut into shape. If you want an unusual colour, professional sign makers can add vinyl film to them in your chosen shade.

Built up lettering

The second option is built up lettering. Letters created in this way have a much thicker appearance and stand out from the sign to a greater degree. This helps to produce a 3D look.

The most common material used to manufacture them is stainless steel. The front of each letter will be cut in the same way as with flat cut lettering, while the sides are welded on afterwards. Then, each letter is powder coated.

Which should you choose?

This will depend on your budget and the effect you wish to achieve. Built up lettering can stand out more, but flat cut letters offer subtlety.
