Three pointers for good office signage
Every office space needs signage, whether for branding purposes or just to help people find their way around. There are some factors that mark good office signage out from bad though, such as those listed below.
The sign is clear and uncluttered
The phrase ‘less is more’ should be your guide when it comes to signage design. The design should feature simple messaging that can be seen even from a distance. A good way to achieve this is to make use of empty space, so the text stands out more. Use high contrast block colours for both the text and the background.
The sign has readable fonts
There is a temptation to go for fancy fonts, but this should be resisted. More basic font styles are easier for people to read, and this is the main point of the signs.
You can vary the size of the lettering – or put some of it in bold – if you want to create more visual interest. One thing you should try to avoid is all caps writing. This is actually more difficult to read, particularly when you are further away.
The sign uses images appropriately
There is nothing wrong with adding images to your signs, as long as they are appropriate. When it comes to wayfinding signage, for example, the only images that are really necessary are ones that help clarify where to go. Your main office sign should also have the company logo as part of it to establish a presence.
