Student accommodation in Manchester gets Gateway 2 approval
Plans for the construction of two student accommodation blocks at a site in Manchester have been granted Gateway 2 approval by the Building Safety Regulator.
These blocks will be built at the Fallowfield Campus that is part of the University of Manchester. They are being overseen by Viridis Living, which is a consortium made up of Equitix, Derwent FM and Graham. This group has been seeking Gateway 2 approval for seven projects, with this being the second to secure it. What it means is that work on the blocks can get underway.
Once they have been completed, each of the blocks will have 14 floors. One of them will contain a total of 207 bedrooms, while the other will have 205. It is thought that work on the construction of them will begin very soon.
The Fallowfield Campus project director for Graham is Neil McFarlane. He told Construction Management that getting Gateway 2 approval was a major step forward for the project.
He then went on to add:
“With structural works now able to commence on these two buildings, and further approvals expected in the coming months, we are making strong progress towards delivering safe, high-quality and sustainable student accommodation for Manchester.”
If the consortium succeeds in gaining this approval for the remaining five projects, it will be a sizeable development. The final total in terms of student accommodation would be around 3,300 rooms.
