Student accommodation block to be built in Manchester

A new building that will provide accommodation for students is set to be constructed at a Manchester site, after the developer secured the necessary financing.

McLaren Property is planning to construct this accommodation block at Upper Brook Street in the city. It will be part of a bigger project to regenerate the Oxford Road corridor at a cost of £450 million. Work on the student housing will now be able to get underway, because McLaren has signed a contract with Legal & General. The latter will provide financing through its Student Living Platform.

This is an initiative that was launched in 2024 and that will see Legal & General put money into purpose-built student accommodation throughout the country. It is a scheme that is expanding at a rapid rate, with this Manchester block being the latest in a string of investments.

When it has been completed, the block will provide housing for 737 students. There will be 449 cluster rooms and 288 studio flats. Other amenities will include landscaped gardens, a cafe and a community hub.

It will be built by McLaren Construction and will cost £160 million. The divisional managing director for the company is David Atherton. Speaking to Construction Enquirer, he stated that:

“With the associated sci tech floorspace now also under construction next door, we are fully on track to deliver positive change, help drive economic growth, through private investment and without the need for public funds.”
