Student accommodation block planned for Manchester site

Plans have been submitted for the construction of a new student accommodation block at a site in Manchester.

Fusion Student is hoping to build this block in Whitworth Street West, which is not far away from Deansgate Locks. If the plans are approved by Manchester City Council, the block would have 39 floors. It would contain a total of 818 bedrooms and would be targeted at young people who are studying in the city. Among the other companies that are involved in the project are Shear Design, Consultant Amber, Gardiner & Theobald and Domis Construction.

The architects that designed the block are Corstorphine & Wright. It would feature an outer coating of bronze and would be copper in colour. In addition to the mix of cluster and studio flats, there would be outdoor terrace areas, bars, a cafe, lounges and a gymnasium on the roof.

If the project gets the go-ahead, it will represent third time lucky for the site. In 2009, an application to build a hotel with 18 floors was given the green light, but the scheme subsequently fell through.

The council then approved plans for a 35-floor tower block called Vision Manchester. This would have had 327 flats and cost £125 million to build, but again the project collapsed before construction could begin.

The land was purchased by Fusion Student two years ago and the company will be hoping for better luck than its predecessors.
