Redevelopment planned for student accommodation in Manchester

Plans have been announced for the redevelopment of a campus in Manchester that houses students, with the project set to be completed in a number of phases.

The campus in question is the Cambridge Halls one that is used as accommodation by students at Manchester Metropolitan University. At the heart of the scheme is the demolition of two existing housing blocks, so that they can be replaced with more modern accommodation. The blocks that would be knocked down are low-rise buildings, while their replacements would be towers. This means the number of rooms available at the site would be significantly increased.

At the moment, the campus provides housing for 770 students. Once the redevelopment project has been completed, the number of bedrooms available at the site will rise to 2,300.

The project is set to be a partnership between the university and Unite, a property developer that specialises in student homes. That company will control 70%, with the remaining 30% owned by the university. The total estimated cost of the project is £390 million.

It will be carried out across several phases, the first of which is expected to get underway sometime next year. The finish date for the project would be five years from now.

Before that can happen though, approval has to be granted by the council, and a contractor must be chosen to deliver the project.
