Plans submitted for student housing in Manchester
Students in Manchester could soon have a wider choice of accommodation options, as plans for three new housing blocks have been submitted to the council.
Those plans form one part of a much bigger redevelopment scheme that is called ‘Sister’, which is being built at a cost of £1.7 billion. The student housing would consist of three tower blocks that are 38, 10 and 8 storeys high. In total, they would provide 1,041 rooms for people who are studying in Manchester. The plans have been submitted to Manchester City Council in the hopes of getting the green light to move forward.
The flats within the blocks would be both studio and cluster accommodation. The latter means accommodation with private bedrooms constructed around shared living and kitchen areas.
If the project gets the go ahead, it would be built on Charles Street. The land is occupied by a disused multi-storey car parking facility at the moment, but this would be knocked down. The chosen site is ‘Plot H’ of the Sister project area.
The University of Manchester has teamed up with ID Manchester Ltd and RG Real Estate Ltd on the plans. The application states that it has the potential to boost the city’s economy by up to £6.7 million.
In addition to housing, the blocks would feature study rooms, social spaces and a gymnasium. There would also be commercial space on the ground floor.
