Over 1,000 homes planned for Manchester sites

Manchester City Council is planning to construct over 1,000 brand new homes, with a number of brownfield sites across the city having been earmarked for this.

These homes will be constructed by several different developers after the council voted to release the land to them. The developers that will take on the job include MSV Housing, Great Places Housing Group, KMM/Southway Housing Trust and the affordable homes division of Legal & General.

Most of the planned homes will be built on brownfield land – over 700 of them in total. The rest will be constructed as part of a redevelopment of Manchester’s eastern fringes.

One of the projects will see a tower block with 23 storeys built in the heart of the city. This will provide social rent housing for 133 people when it has been completed. A further 271 homes are set to be constructed on land close to Manchester’s outer ring-road. Houses will make up two-fifths of them, with the remaining third being flats.

Other planned projects include 12 brownfield sites being turned into a total of 160 affordable homes. Meanwhile, the site that used to be occupied by Levenshulme Baths will have 34 homes built on it.

The leader of Manchester City Council is Bev Craig. Speaking to Inside Housing, she said:

“We are delivering on our commitment made through our housing strategy to vastly increase the number of affordable homes – including significant numbers of social housing – being built in Manchester.”
