New homes to be built on playing fields in Manchester
Hundreds of brand new homes are set to be constructed on playing fields in Manchester, following the decision by the local council to give the plans the green light.
Mellands Playing Fields in the Gorton district of the city will be turned into this housing development. Full planning permission for the construction has now been granted, with the work expected to get underway within weeks. The developer behind it is Kellen Homes and a total of 303 homes will be built as part of the project.
Of these, 267 will be semi-detached houses. There will be 22 four-bedroom houses, 135 with three bedrooms and 110 that have two bedrooms. The developer has committed to making 60 of the houses affordable ones.
The remaining homes to be built at the site will be flats. There will be 36 of these, in a block with three storeys. Other amenities that are set to be provided as part of the finished development include a youth centre that will measure 11,000 sq ft.
All of the flats will be managed by the Centrepoint homelessness charity. Sally Orlopp from the charity told a local source that:
“Our mission (is to) provide high-quality affordable housing for young people in work or in an apprenticeship, with the rent capped at no more than a third of their full-time salary.”
The development is expected to be completed by 2027.
