Mayor of Manchester announces major regeneration plans

The Mayor of Greater Manchester has announced ambitious plans for regeneration, which will see a total of 30 different construction projects carried out across the area.

These plans will include each of the 10 boroughs and will cost around £1 billion to complete. The first phase of them will involve three building projects for each borough and will run for a decade, at an estimated cost of £400 million. It will be made up of a mix of employment spaces and housing and will lead to the creation of jobs for 22,000 people.

In total, almost 3,000 brand new homes will be built as part of this phase, alongside work space covering 2 million sq ft. The financing for the project is coming from the GM Good Growth Fund, which has the support of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund.

One of the projects that will be part of the first phase is converting the building that used to house the Kendals store into an office block. A budget of £44 million has been earmarked for that. Elsewhere, 331 homes will be constructed at the Prince’s Gate development in Oldham.

Then there will be nearly 400 homes built at Trafford Wharf, while the Adelphi Village development in Salford will be a mix of affordable and social housing.

Other key parts of this phase include the regeneration of the Cotton Works in Wigan and the revamp of the Longfield Centre in Prestwich.
