Manchester to get new civil service campus

Manchester is set to get a sizeable new office complex that will be used to house civil servants, after the city council gave the green light to proposals for it.

This complex will consist of two separate blocks and it will be called the Manchester Digital Campus. The location that has been selected for it is Ancoats, and it is expected to have a major impact on that area. Construction work on the complex will take up to four years to complete and will lead to the creation of jobs for local people. It is hoped that this will spark an economic regeneration.

The total cost of the construction is forecast to be roughly £310 million, but the final projected cost could be much higher. Once improvements and fit outs to the site and the surrounding neighbourhood are included, it could be more like £1 billion.

When it has been completed, the complex will measure approximately 900,000 sq ft. It will be used as a base by a number of departments of the civil service, but will primarily concentrate on digital skills. The complex is set to be designed by AtkinsRealis.

Bev Craig from the council told Construction Enquirer that:

“Gaining planning approval for both the GPA’s digital campus and the latest city centre park is the launch pad for the transformation of this site.”

Work on the building of it is due to begin next year.
