Manchester offices could be turned into hotel

An office block in the heart of Manchester could be set for conversion into a hotel as part of plans to make better use of the space.

Deansgate Ventures Ltd is the company behind this idea and it has submitted the plans to Manchester City Council for planning approval. It wants to create the hotel within a building called Maybrook House, which is situated on the edge of Blackfriars Street and Deansgate. If the plans are given the green light, a hotel with a total of 240 rooms will be created there.

The plans would not see the entire building transformed though – only the higher floors. These are not currently occupied and are considered to be ill-equipped for the needs of companies in 2026. The thinking behind the application is that converting them into high grade hotel accommodation would bring the building fully back into use.

Jon Matthews Architects have designed the project, which is an ambitious one. It would involve a complete restructuring and reordering of the inside, as well as the construction of an additional two storeys. There would also be new spaces built for a lounge and bar, while the facade would undergo renovation.

Deansgate Ventures Ltd has confirmed that businesses occupying the lower floor offices would continue to do so while work is ongoing. This would minimise the disruption.

The conversion would take up to two years to complete, if planning approval is granted.
