Manchester City Council announces homes partnership
Manchester City Council has announced a new partnership that will lead to the construction of more than 1,000 homes during the next 10 years, all of them built on council land.
The local authority is teaming up with the Greater Manchester Pension Fund on this plan, which is part of the larger This City scheme. It is aiming to construct a total of 1,600 houses at seven different brownfield sites that are situated in central, east and north Manchester. These sites will be owned by the council, which should make the process a lot easier.
It will begin with a development in the city’s Northern Quarter that will provide 126 houses. The location that has been chosen for it is Postal Street, on a site that was previously occupied by a commercial building. This has now been knocked down ahead of the start of design work on the housing.
Another development that is being planned for the upcoming decade is a large one at Harpurhey that will feature over 650 houses. There will also be smaller schemes in Ancoats, Ardwick and Longsight.
Bev Craig is the leader of Manchester City Council. Speaking to Construction Enquirer, she stated that joining forces with the fund would let work get underway more quickly and allow for the inclusion of affordable housing:
“This partnership with the Greater Manchester Pension Fund will enable us to drive forward the work of This City to build the homes the city needs on council-owned land.”
