How to produce effective retail signage

There are numerous reasons why a retail outlet might need signage.

From front of shop signs to indicate the name and purpose of a store, to promotional ones that advertise sales and offers, how can your retail store come up with signs that work well?

Keep it short

People often don’t have the time or patience to read long-winded text on a sign, so try to keep it short and snappy. Think in terms of social media posts, which generally have to stay within strict character limits.

Ensure its readable

You might have a witty or memorable name for your store, or a catchy slogan for your sale. This won’t matter though if people can’t read the text on your signs. Choose font styles that are easy to read, without too much in the way of curly or elaborate fonts. It’s often advisable to avoid using multi-coloured lettering, too, for the same reason.

Add a personal touch

The personal touch can do a lot to boost the impact of an advertising sign. That means using words like ‘you’ and ‘your’ instead of more generalised language.

This will immediately make the customer feel like whatever you are offering is directed at them, and is ultimately more engaging.

Test it out

Get a member of staff to test the effectiveness of a sign by walking or driving past. That way, you will know if changes need to be made to either its design or location.
