Business Signage Benefits of Signs

How to design an effective directional signage system

One of the most important types of signage for any organisation is directional signage. Whether you are running an office, restaurant or factory, people need to be able to find their way around the building. Coming up with a good directional signage system is all about design and application.

Think simple and logical

The last thing you want to do is confuse people, so keep it simple and logical. The style of lettering should be attractive – but not at the expense of readability. You can also opt for colours that induce calm, like green and blue.

When it comes to setting up your directional signage, apply logical thinking. Where will be the most useful locations? The front entrance, lifts, stairs and corridors are all good places.

Devise a coordinated system

Directional signage requires a system to make sense of it. One of the most popular and effective is colour coding. This can take the form of having different coloured signs for each floor or section of the building.

Another option is to have signs that are different shapes. The idea is to make it that bit simpler for visitors to find what they are looking for.

Do not use too many signs

Some organisations go overboard with directional signage. This is borne of the belief that the more detail they provide, the more effective their system will be. In reality, visitors are confused by too many signs, so opt for the less-is-more approach.
