How to avoid creating boring hoardings
Hoardings are used in a lot of situations, including retail refurbishments, property developments and building sites. How often do you really notice the hoardings you pass in everyday life though? For most people, the answer is not often, and the reason for that can be their bland design.
Where companies go wrong
The mistake that so many companies make with hoardings is in treating them as basic adverts. This means the design consists of a logo, some (usually uninspired writing) and a standard picture. We have seen it all before and so it fails to grab the attention. What can you do to give your hoardings some sparkle though?
Avoid the overload
You do not need to cram masses of information onto your hoardings – just get the main message across. Keep text to a minimum and try to make your point using images instead.
Be bold and brave
Too many companies are afraid to take chances with their hoardings, opting for safe designs instead. They are a golden opportunity to dazzle people with your vision though, so do not be afraid of strong colours and bold imagery.
Tell an inspiring story
Storytelling is at the heart of compelling hoardings, whether they are for a new retail outlet or a property development. What will the finished brand or development bring to people and the local area? Why should they care? You need to tell that story using concepts, quotes and imagery that intrigue passersby.
