Planning Permission for Signs

How to apply for signage planning permission

If you want to put up a sign outside your business, the chances are you will need planning permission. This is a prospect that strikes dread into the hearts of business owners, because they imagine a long process of red tape. It does not have to be that way, however.

Check if planning permission is required

The first thing to do is find out whether planning permission is needed. There are certain types of signage specifications that are exempt, with those falling under the heading of deemed consent. Among them are:

  • Temporary signs for promoting events
  • Hanging or fascia signs below a certain size
  • Signs placed on terraces or business forecourts
  • Signs around temporary construction hoardings

Identify your local planning authority

Once you are sure you need planning permission, you will have to find out which planning authority you apply to. In most cases, it will be either your County or District Council. One exception is for businesses in London. They apply to the London Borough Council.

Another exception is if the building where the sign will be placed lies within a National Park. If that is the case, you need to apply to the National Park Authority.

Gather necessary information and materials

The application form for planning permission is usually quite simple, but you will have to submit supporting materials too. They include detailed plans outlining the site and any lighting that will be affixed to the sign; detailed drawings showing the sign and where it will be placed; and comprehensive sign specifications. This means exact size and weight measurements.

Make these supporting materials are as in-depth as you possibly can. Basic or vague documentation that does not provide the required information is liable to result in a rejection. You can also help your chances by researching potential neighbourhood impacts caused by the sign.

Submit your application

Once you have gathered those materials, you can submit your application. This is done online using a Planning Portal. It will involve paying a charge and all of the supporting materials must be submitted at the same time.

After that, you will have to wait for a decision by the local authority planning committee.
