Retail Signage Planning Permission for Signs

Do shop signs need planning permission?

Every retail outlet needs a front of shop sign to advertise itself to the public.

The design of it is about capturing the essence of your brand, but you may need to consider legalities too. This article will explore everything you need to know about signage planning permission.

Is it required?

For the vast majority of stores, planning permission will need to be secured for a sign.

The only situation in which it will not be a requirement is if the sign you want to add to the front of your shop is less than 0.3 metres squared in size. A sign that small will have serious disadvantages, however – not least the fact that will not stand out from any sort of distance.

If your chosen storefront sign is an illuminated one, you will need planning permission no matter the size.

How is planning permission secured?

This will need to be done by applying to your local council’s planning authority. They will take into consideration the setting and style of the sign when making their decision.

It’s a good idea to be as patient and reasonable as possible, as well as making sure you comply with all regulations. This involves making sure you have considered safety issues and that the sign is of a professional standard. Your sign must also not block the visibility of any existing public signage.

Erecting a sign following failure to obtain planning permission can result in penalties, including financial ones.
