Commercial signage colour mistakes to be avoided

When you are designing signage for commercial purposes, colour will play a large part in the process. Research has found that it can boost brand recognition by as much as 80% – but there are some colour mistakes that must be avoided at all costs. This blog will outline three of them.

Using pastel shades

Pastel shades can be appealing to the eye, but they are still not always the best choice for commercial signage. This is because they are low in contrast, while their pale hues can make them blend into the surrounding environment. This is just what you do not want your signage to do – you need it to stand out. So, it can be a good idea to give the pastels a pass!

Using harsh neon colours

You might think you need to go to the opposite extreme, by deploying very bright neon colours. There is no question that people will notice your signage if you do that, but not necessarily in a good way. The harshness of neon colours can lead to eye strain and can also be too stimulating. The result is that people find it hard to take in the actual message of your sign.

Making the text and background too similar

Where you want the contrast to be high in your commercial signage is in the background colour and the text. This way, the writing will stand out clearly – even if people are viewing it from a distance. For example, using orange text on a red background should be avoided.
