Building site safety signs and what they mean
One of the most notable features of any building site is safety signage. However, these signs come in different sizes, shapes and colours that place them within one of five main categories.
Mandatory signs
These are signs that all construction sites must use for keeping both their employees and visitors safe from harm. They are coloured white and blue, and are there to remind people to use safety equipment like hard hats, harnesses and goggles.
Warning signs
Warning signs are yellow triangles with black borders, and they emphasise potential hazards on a construction site. Examples include wet floors, high voltage areas, gases that are flammable and falling bricks.
Prohibition signs
These red, white and black signs feature a circle with a pictogram and a red line through it. They are there to highlight prohibited actions on building sites. Examples include no parking, no access to a particular area and no use of naked flames.
Emergency signs
This type of rectangular sign highlights important areas of the site for emergencies. They will be found at any assembly points and exits for use if something like a fire breaks out, but will also be placed where the first aid kits are kept. They are coloured green and white.
Firefighting signs
These red and white signs indicate the storage areas used for fire extinguishers and alarms. Due to the similar colouring, they are rectangular or square to mark them out from circular prohibition signs.
