Illuminated Signs Business Signage

Are illuminated signs expensive for businesses to run?

Choosing an illuminated sign for your business can have major benefits in terms of visibility. It will ensure that everyone can see your business, even after dark. What puts some firms off though is the belief that running an illuminated sign is expensive.

Is that the case? Read on to find out.

Initial costs

When looked at in terms of upfront costs, it is clear than an illuminated sign will be more expensive than a traditional non-illuminated version. One reason for this is because the manufacturing costs are higher. The sign maker will have to fit the electrical components, including the lights, the wiring and the power supply. More materials are needed, and the work is highly skilled.

Other factors that influence upfront costs are the size and complexity of the sign. An illuminated sign measuring 4×2 feet will cost more than one that is 3×1.5 feet. This is because more lights will be needed. Design complexity – e.g. 3D lettering, multi-colours and intricate logos – will also raise the upfront price tag.

Operating costs

At this point, many companies think “not for us” – but this is short-sighted. Let us look at the longer-term expense.

Energy efficiency

Of course you will have energy costs, but the right choice of light will keep them to a minimum. LED lighting is more energy efficient than neon, costing around 5p per day. It also has cheaper manufacturing costs.

Durability and lifespan

Once it is installed, your sign should run for years without the bulbs needing replaced. Neon lighting has an average lifespan of up to 15 years, while LED typically lasts for more than five.

Maintenance

LED is the lowest maintenance type of lighting, because the flex tubing is less likely to break than the glass tubes used for neon and incandescent lights. Overall maintenance costs are quite low for all types though.

Return on investment

Illuminated signs offer superb return on investment, which dwarfs the initial outlay. Their warm, vibrant look encourages people to enter your business – particularly on cold, dark days. It creates the perception that it is alive and inviting, which is more likely to increase custom.
