A guide to the regulations for shop signs
Setting up in a shop of their own is the dream for many people. There is a lot of work involved in getting there though, from finding premises to kitting them out.
Then, there is the matter of the front of shop sign. This is essential to publicise your shop, but you must also be aware of the regulations before putting one up.
Planning permission
The main regulation for a shop sign is planning permission. The only instance where you would not need to get that is if the sign is 0.3 metres squared or less in size.
Very few shop signs are that small, but it is surprising how many new owners are unaware of the need to secure planning permission before putting their signs up.
If the sign you want to have at the front of your shop is an illuminated one, you will also need to get planning permission for that.
Securing planning permission
You will need to contact the city or borough council for the area where your shop will be based. It is the planning office that will decide on your case, and you can contact it through writing, by email, telephone or via the council website.
It is rare for planning permission to be turned down for shops, so long as the proposed sign does not contain offensive text or imagery and will be installed in a safe and professional manner.
