A guide to adding signs to listed buildings

Listed buildings are ones that hold protected status, because they are considered to be of national importance.

In the modern day, many of these buildings are being repurposed for commercial use – but their listed status brings complications when it comes to installing signage. This blog will outline what you need to know.

Prior to installation

You will have to secure listed building consent before installing any signage. You apply to your local authority for this and will need to demonstrate that your signage and installation method will not damage the building.

Signage design and materials

The chosen style of your signage and the materials you wish to use will play a big role in determining whether you get listed building consent. If you can demonstrate that they will fit in with the existing character of the building, you stand a much better chance. That means fairly traditional-looking signs made from metal, stone or wood will be better than contemporary styles like illuminated signage.

How to safely install the signs

There are ways that signs can be installed without damage to the exterior of a listed building. One option is to use very high bond (VHB) tape, which provides extremely strong adhesion. This will be best for medium-sized or small signs. On the other hand, if your exterior signage is large, consider using standoff mounts. These will keep the sign away from the surface of the building, making damage more or less impossible.
