A guide to workplace safety signage

The safety signage used in workplaces is not all the same – there are four categories divided by colour.

This blog will provide a handy guide to telling them apart, so you can get the right signs for your needs.

Prohibition signage

This is generally red, and indicates which actions are forbidden.

The signs are designed as red circles with a representation of the prohibited action in black in the middle, with a diagonal red line running across it. Examples include ‘no smoking’ and ‘no pedestrian access’ signs. These can be seen everywhere, from offices to shops.

Warning signage

This type of sign warns people about workplace areas that are dangerous.

The design is usually a yellow triangle and a black outline. There will also often be a symbol, such as an exclamation mark in black in the middle.

They are mostly used by businesses whose work presents a risk to the public, like construction firms, or ones working with chemicals.

Mandatory signage

These feature a blue circle with the required action shown as an image inside it. They inform people of any tasks that must be performed to ensure safety, such as wearing protective goggles or hard hats.

Again, they are often used by manufacturing or construction firms.

Emergency signage

This type of sign provides information on what is to be done in an emergency. It is usually a green square or rectangle with a white symbol. Examples include ‘first aid’ and ‘emergency exit’ signs, and they are used within most workplaces.
